Yeah, I know that sounds crazy. But the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. We need someone who can return kicks. We need someone who can be another linebacker/safety. We need another running back that could come in and make explosive plays.
Peppers was consistently the best athlete on the field in many of the games that I saw him play in last year. He can cover running backs out of the backfield. He is an explosive running back with the ball in his hands. And his special teams skills can not denied.
One pick takes care of three roster spots and hopefully he can develop into a star in two out of the three.
Heck, we might even be able to trade back and pick up some spots and still nab him.
Kid is a stud and the ultimate utility knife.
Oh, you're going way back there...

Funny
Weaknesses
Scouts question his instincts and lack of ball production. Has just one interception and 10 passes defensed at Michigan. Slow to recognize construct of play and can be found playing through a straw at times. Needs better recognition and anticipation to become an improvising play-maker. Doesn't always trust his feet in coverage and will maul at the top of the route. Just a guy when asked to play deep safety. Slow to read and range until ball is in the air. Can be overzealous against play-action and drawn below his deep ball responsibilities. Too small for take-on duties at linebacker. Leads into tackles with ducked head. Opts to hit rather than wrap-up.
Peppers has the physical ability....there is a reason teams did not TARGET him when he was in coverage ... and he was used in coverage ...
However, Collins, Thompson, and Peppers would be a nice three Safety look.
Except they are the same player. Peppers isn't a FS no matter what his 40 time is. Of he had elite coverage skills he would have never lined up for a single snap at LB. He was supposed to be a CB. didn't play well there. Moved to S. Then to LB. He's going to wind up a SS rover type in the NFL.
The silliness of him practicing w the LBs was a great move by him as his agent but he's not a good fit for the Giants unless they think he grows into a WILL.
Want that guy then Reddick over him if both are there.
No he can't play FS and nickle at the same time so maybe as a rookie he learns FS and nickle DB. year 2 starting FS.
Say Thompson pans out ....
Peppers is your KR/PR and nickle DB and backup FS
plus he is in your dime package and is a good gunner on coverage. Not to mention the odd trick play.
Its the 23rd pick not top 10 pick.
That is a lot of value in the cap era for a Bottom of the 1st rd pick
I love love love Peppers and would be excited to see him in blue, but not if it means sacrificing a quality player at a position of great need, like TE, OT, or RB.

I'm biased in this way as well. He's a dynamic KR.
If Howard or Njoku are available they'll be the pick, though if Cook is available that would be interesting.
After that I think it's probably Taco. Don't think it will be an OL or Peppers.
I want the BPA at #23 and if its Peppers so freaking be it.

I knew there were enough geezers here that would remember that reference.
He can do everything. Peppers can do for you.
IMO we can and will do better in both the production and 'fit' in our defense if we go that side of the ball in Round 1.

Baker seems like a guy that would get worn down in the pros. He's barely 200 lbs and he's gonna play safety? I'd have concerns of his ability to stay healthy at that weight.

He played FS 1 season ... he was not targeted teams new better. If he was horrible in coverage there would be film of him getting torched
Why draft a guy to play his third best position when the results don't project there? There will be better options for us if he's even there. Which I doubt because someone that needs a SS will draft him before #23. We just don't need one so it makes no sense.
Your right, that's why I want Taco instead.

One of the greatest shows ever. Luluuuuuu.
lmao!
Baker is a do everything S. I think Peppers can play a hybrid LB/S role and he can play with Collins. Baker may be a better fit though. I'd also bet on him being a better NFL player than Peppers.
That's quite a bold statement considering that Peppers rarely played RB in college
His burst is crazy.
Hence, my comment on utility. We cover a lot of bases with one pick. Plus, like many here say, we are now in a matchup league where traditional roles on offense and defense are blurred. He would be an amazing asset in the red zone.
And I don't think he will go as early as some think. Again, if we can move back which the Giants have done in the past and add another mid-late round pick, that picks looks better and better. Use that mid-late rounder on an developmental OT.
This. ^^ Strong kid that will withstand the pounding better than McCaffrey. Put him at RB and let him develop at a position he played as a kid. He was misused at Michigan. A 5'11", 215 bowling ball. The perfect compliment to Perkins.
KR and LB/S, to boot. A solid pick that allows us to do more with less picks later. How many of the other potential draftees play multiple positions and play them well?
We seem to be just fine at the Safety position. Collins is one of the top 3 Safeties in the league. Maybe the best. Darian Thompson looked very good in the 1 full game he played last year. Also impressed throughout mini & training camp. Andrew Adams played very well for a rookie UDFA that was thrown into a starting role. He should be better in his 2nd year especially with less snaps. If I was the Giants I'd add a vet Safety in the Deon Grant mold to teach the young guys.
Want nothing to do with a college safety who averaged 4 tackles a game for his career and forced 1 career turnover. Yes you read that correctly. In 27 games he forced 1 turnover. That was an INT. No fumbles recovered and no forced fumbles.
I'm surprised to read the lack of instincts and recognition on Peppers, it would suggest a big leap of faith to project him to FS in the NFL.
I love love love Peppers and would be excited to see him in blue, but not if it means sacrificing a quality player at a position of great need, like TE, OT, or RB.
This.
The draft normally isn't about now, it's about getting the best talent that fits your system and culture.
He really doesn't though. He's a DB that isn't great in coverage, isn't a very good tackler and doesn't create turnovers. Where is the Pro Bowler in that? As a return man sure he has Pro Bowl potential. Not on defense though.
I wonder that too... but what if the Giants actually *did* draft him as an RB?
I don't see it, but that would be mighty intriguing.
He can do everything. Peppers can do for you.
Now we're talkin'. I wonder what the draft projections for Baker are -- I'd think too many teams are wary of his size to take him in the first.
No he's not a good tackler. He missed over 15% of his tackle attempts in 2015 & 2016 combined. Including 20.4% of his tackle attempts in 2015.
